Developing a Vision To Work For Yourself Online

You’ve probably thought about going into business online at one point of time or another. While that idea may seem enticing where you can stay at home and work on your own terms, the mindset and workload that comes with it is not to be taken lightly. With that, I want to talk about some of the points which goes into developing your vision in working for yourself online.

Recognizing Your Talents

Puzzle Solution by Francesco Marino

While you may believe you have nothing to contribute to the online community, it’s not true. Each and every one of us have a talent which we can immerse ourselves in and share it through social communities like Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, Digg and so on. The things which we express shows our unique traits and it defines our personality. I’m not talking about glamorizing yourself so that you’re a big star online. I’m talking about being true to who you are and not hype up your status because nobody really likes seeing you label yourself with all these fancy names. So who are you really?

When  you can talk in a down-to-earth matter and even have readers engage themselves with you on the subjects which you put out. That’s amazing content. No doubt it may take awhile to hone the craft of finding your voice online. However, it starts with what you know. So share what you already know and someone will eventually say something about it. It only takes one for the rest to follow. Thus, recognizing what you’re good at will take you further than something you don’t know more about. The latter just runs the risk of you quitting before there is any maturity in the efforts you put out. Therefore, know yourself.

Managing Availability

Time is the next factor through which you’ll find your efforts filtered through. So how can you leverage the things you do that you can channel your efforts productively? You’ll be surprise to see that many who don’t know how to organize their time run into a game of balancing tasks that can run amok. In turn, they would find the overload of information too much to handle and drop everything at once. That’s why it good to keep in mind that nothing is done for free.

What you’re doing while it’s pure passion has the backdrop of business and profits in the making. Thus, knowing how much time you can instill in the places you need for everything to process is a great habit to build. This will help you in the long run. Besides, you’ll never know if you’ll bank on a million. It’s just a matter of perspective and managing your time wisely so that you won’t burn out.

Seeing Opportunity For Growth

As you recognize your talents and manage your time availability, you’re going to have a flow which will bring in some steady traffic. Basically, you’re somebody now. So at this point, building relationships with partners through promoting their products or even reviewing their service might help. You want to see this as an opportunity for growth. That’s because it might be something which you’ll do naturally just like TGIF Links which happened so quickly.

Therefore I always find that promoting information through those who have commented on my posts or the services they use, gives me a better understanding of another portion of the blogosphere I haven’t yet tapped into. This happened with the 100 Blog Comments Challenge. The result turned out to be more friends, more knowledge and even more growth. Furthermore, continuing this down the line might help you with joint ventures or even create business partners. So you’ll never know unless you try!

Merging Passion and Profits

Thinking Heart by Francesco Marino

When you’ve finally start seeing it all come together, the climax of building relationships online and seeing growth will push you further to expand ways which you can merge your passion into profits. Thus, the questions which might linger are:

  • What can I do to make money with what I already know?
  • How do I market my information to those who want it?

While these are the beginning stages of monetizing yourself online, whether it’s through your blog or your product, it takes some work. Implementing keyword research and search engine optimization strategies to rank high on Google, Yahoo or Bing can help. Overall, there are so many strategies which can lead you to sales but the most successful one of all is through article marketing.

You may want to read Alex Whalley’s new ebook entitled Organic Traffic Jam, The Ultimate Keyword Research Resource which can help you with the technical process that goes on behind search engines online. In turn, this knowledge can mean the difference between better sales and no sale. Overall, you’ll be surprise at how much further ahead you can drive your products without all the expensive marketing campaigns.

Lead Onto Others As You Want to be Lead

Eventually, it is the ultimate truth that those who give, gets plenty back. Being successful does not mean you don’t hold back but that you give more. One way of doing that is to teach. It is through teaching that you’re sharing information with your readers online. Besides, they were there to follow you in the beginning and they’ll be there when you’re much more successful. So you’re basically building your social proof which allows others to continue to share your expertise.

No doubt, having a blog allows you to do that. Furthermore, it is a flagship which your business can be steered time and time again through tough waters through your online business. So the keyword here is consistency. I know you’ve heard of that time and time before but without it, you’ll lose what is the core element which keeps your business active even when you don’t feel like it. Thus, having a base to which you’ll expand from is much more productive than one which you cannot.

Thinking Long-Term

While most of us might not know what it is we want yet, those who have kept consistency on par with their purpose have made it further than those who have not. It’s the same thing with finishing a degree in school. You know you’re almost there but because of personal matters which at the moment may have taken your dreams, you have given up on ‘truckin’. I’m guilty of it myself but I know better for it takes more than one day, one moment to stop me from going forward. In seeing it out over a long view, it was quite obviously my fault.

So if you can’t accept that the weight of life is falling on you time and time again, you better learn how to fly and let those weight become nothing more than mere air. When you can see it that way, you’ll find that they are only your illusions, barriers to which you have put on yourself. Make your efforts work for you long-term, don’t let the short-sightedness of your vision cripple you from going into business for yourself on the internet.

What are your thoughts on developing a vision for working online?

    Hey Thu,

What a fantastic and comprehensive post (cool looking blog too).
You’ve covered loads of the fundamental elements.

I’d agree that it’s important to be passionate about what your doing – it’s not necessary but certainly will help with maintaining consistence and ensure someone stays dedicated to a project in the long term…

… and the ‘long term’ is key. People setting out to work for themselves online should without doubt be prepared for the long term (magic bullet/get rich quick and all that junk is just a myth).

The only thing I’d add is an awareness that someone starting out may/will have to get their head around the ‘techie stuff’ (I know a lot can be outsourced – which is great if it can be afforded) but it’s good to have a grasp of the basics. This can sometimes seem a little intimidating and is a bit of a steep learning curve BUT it’s another one of those things that separates those who will make it from those who don’t. If that’s not something that they are prepared to do, then maybe this is not the thing for them…

    …but that’s just my 2 cents ;-)

      Hi Rob,

Thank you for the addition in technical awareness. I just went over to your blog for a moment and I’m amazed. You’ve got awesome content as well. Not to say the least, your humor and personality really shines on your blog. I love that you have ebooks available and those are treasure troves for me as I will be reviewing them soon. In particular the Getting Technical one. That will be of help for my readers. Thank you so much for stopping by to leave your two cents.

      Cheers! :)

I loved this post! You gave such great insight here and it’s all the real deal kind of stuff. I love seeing how fast and furiously you are blowing up. It kind of makes me feel like I am doing something wrong :) Sticking to sharing about what you passionate about is soo important because you’ll never run out of content. I’ve seen many new bloggers fall by the wayside because they didn’t take it seriously or were just trying to make a quick buck. I really am a huge fan and like to think that I’ve been around from the beginning. Nice work-and man do I have some catching up to do…I just wish I was more tech savvy lol.

      Haha Nunzio,

It’s all love. That’s really what it comes down to. When I can get myself to that teaching level, you know it’s going down. :) I’m pretty traditional though. Work hard brings in time to play and back to another day. Thank you so much for your support. And yes! This blog would be empty without your voice on it. If you need help with anything let me know!

      Cheers!

    Hey Thu,

I actually had a really long discussion with my boss just recently because I told him that I want to begin freelancing full-time (I’ll post about this later :P ).

But, the one thing that really stood out in the conversation was that through 30+ years of running his own business he said to me “find that one thing you’re great at and give it your all” – this is so absolutely true because we can often get so wrapped up in all these others skills we have but our one great one will be the one that gives us the greatest opportunities.

You have to leverage what you know and then dominate it.

Not only that but you always have to keep an open mind to how you’re going to evolve and continue to build systems which allow you to make money from your work instead of simply doing it as another job.

      Hey Murray,

Freelancing full-time huh? That’s awesome! Do update me on your pursuits that I can support you whenever needed. I’m here to help out so let me know if you need a hand with anything. Your thoughts here also came at a timely point as I have recently began to build my online time around certain priorities plus the responsibilities I have to be committed to in real life. Thus, that one thing seems to happen after hours when nobody’s looking. It’s like being in your science lab and working on that experiment to turn it alive. Thus, it’s a neverending journey but you need to refine it as time comes and most importantly share those ideas that it can provide feedback for you to continuously build upon it. I take my job seriously however, I find that I’m also prone to the factors which also makes me work defectively and that is not being able to take control of my time. Thus, the job mentality is a sacrifice for the moment so that you can fulfill your ‘one thing’.

Thanks so much for the awesome conversation. I’ll be seeing you soon.
